Analog-Forestry

Guaruma is contributing to an agricultural project at Mango Verde, a piece of property between Las Mangas and El Pital. The property has two parcels of land that are being developed using two different agricultural methods.

On the first, CARE and FHIA are directing an agroforestry project, which integrates woody perennials with annual cash crops. On the second parcel, we are implementing analog forestry techniques that will maintain a tree-dominated ecosystem by mimicking the structure and function of the indigenous forest.

The project at Mango Verde aims to teach local farmers about alternatives to slash and burn agriculture and to help sustain rural communities by encouraging the use of species that provide commercial products.
